By now the actors have to be sick of the bromance comments. But I actually think their off screen friendship is crystal clear in the show... especially in the last episode [1.23].

Danno's resistance to get close to McGarrett at the beginning of the season just told me he was reserved about the poeple he made his friends - and I'm kind of like that in a way. I can talk to anyone, but making real friends takes me a while.

And McGarrett, although he's pretty well connected - he doesn't strike me as the kind of guy that has many friends.

I think that at the beginning of the season, Danny was still missing his family back in New Jersey. He was probably used to them being the people he was closest to, and now here he was in Hawaii, having to make new friends. I've known many people like that: they are surrounded by family and don't have to reach beyond that circle. Plus, he was faced with this crazy loose cannon in McGarrett. But once he got used to these new people, he realized that you can have "family" that isn't really family. And Steve, well he's just Steve.
